A new LED lighting solution to reduce energy consumption and provide optimum comfort for all motorists

The Bevrijding Tunnel on the A12 motorway links Antwerp to Brussels. This 350m long tunnel which is composed of 2 tubes was built at the end of the 1970s. Approximately 40,000 cars pass through this tunnel every day.

The lighting system is almost 35 years old and needed to be replaced. The Flemish Ministry of Roads and Mobility (AWV) wanted a sustainable lighting solution that would reduce the energy consumption and guarantee safety and comfort for all motorists driving through the tunnel.

To achieve their objectives, they chose a lighting solution with the ContiLED. Installed in a continuous line, the ContiLED offers maximum visual comfort while providing the required lighting levels with significant energy savings. Indeed, thanks to this new lighting scheme, the Ministry will cut its energy consumption by 694,000kWh per year, which represents approximately €98,000. The long life of the LEDs will also lead to a reduction in maintenance costs.

TA bright white light has replaced the old yellow light, improving visual comfort to safely guide drivers through this tunnel. The white light also optimises the visual perception of the drivers, highlighting any potential obstacles, to increase security in the tunnel.

BalPlast marker lights were installed along the entire length of the tunnel. Permanently illuminated, they clearly indicate the road and guide drivers naturally through the tunnel under normal circumstances and in case of fire.

A total of 542 ContiLED luminaires were installed in this tunnel, making it the first road tunnel in Flanders to be completely lit by LED lighting.

BUCARAMANGA LIGHTING RENOVATION PLAN
Complete lighting solution transforms the nocturnal landscape whilst cutting energy costs and CO2 emissions by 61%

Bucaramanga in Colombia has the country’s eighth largest population and is known as the City of Parks. The city launched a renovation plan in 2014 to enhance public spaces and provide safer environments for residents to take advantage of sports and cultural activities. The city has implemented several initiatives including a weekly night cycle ride to gather together the young and the old in a fun, recreational activity.

For this plan to succeed, the city needed to create brighter and safer environments by increasing the lighting levels and improving visual comfort. It was also important for the city to reduce its carbon footprint due to the high levels of pollution from the many vehicles on the roads. The city set the goal of converting at least 40% of the lighting for its roads and parks to an LED solution with a remote management system by the end of 2016.

Schréder was the ideal partner to help the city successfully convert their lighting scheme. More than 900 Teceo (on 10.5m high posts) fitted with the Owlet Nightshift system was installed on the most important avenues which link the north to the south of the city.
The Teceo provides a bright white light that ensures safety for all the pedestrians and numerous cars, motorbikes, taxis and buses travelling down these axes. The luminaires are dimmed to 50% for 7 hours of an average 12 hour night, when less light is needed. The Akila installed on 21m high masts and the Nano LED were chosen to light the Villa Olimpica area which houses many sporting venues including the Alfonso Lopez football stadium, Bicentennial Coliseum and tennis courts. The new lighting dramatically improves a sense of security and well-being for people making their way to and from events as the roads are in need of maintenance.

The city is delighted with the new lighting which has cut energy costs and CO2 emissions by 61%! The Owlet Nightshift also enables them to better manage the lighting scheme and reduce their maintenance operations. Residents really appreciate the safer and more welcoming environments as they can fully indulge in their leisure activities at night.
