Environmental lighting solution for sustainable urban development campus
When the city of Heidelberg regenerated an abandoned freight area into a high-tech campus called Bahnstadt, they created one of Europe’s largest urban development projects based entirely on sustainable passive housing standards.
Bahnstadt provides 166 hectares of land with optimal conditions for living spaces, science and business including a crèche, cultural facilities, offices, laboratories and commercial units as well as a pioneering mobility infrastructure with 3.5km of bike paths; all designed to meet stringent sustainability criteria.
The entire district is lit by nearly 1,000 Teceo LED luminaires to ensure safety, visibility and comfort. The light has been designed according to the different uses of the spaces, for example, warm white LEDs light the pedestrian areas while neutral white LEDs light the streets. The goal was to avoid shadows and guarantee a feeling of well-being for local residents and visitors to the area.
The luminaires are dimmed to different levels during the night to reduce energy consumption to a minimum while ensuring a secure environment.
The 3.5km long bike path is lit by the energy saving Piano LED luminaires whose efficiency is further improved by the Owlet remote management system. This system provides light only when it is needed. The light is dimmed when the bike path is not being used. As soon as a cyclist or pedestrian arrives, their presence is detected by infra-red sensors providing optimal, needs-based lighting. Once the person is gone, the light is dimmed again from 90% to 30%.
This innovative solution has generated energy and CO2 savings of 75%.
